Seriously…WTH does calling to action an entire industry even mean in the year 2010?</p>
<p>Let me spell it out as it relates to the EDA market. It means, a disruptive shift is happening with our customers’ customers. And as a result, our customers, the semiconductor companies, are now facing some very complex challenges that can no longer be solved by a traditional, disaggregated design process. We all know the process &#8211; pretty well as a matter of fact – it’s the comfort zone we’ve lived in for decades: bottoms up, based on random point tools (some best-in-class, others not so much.)</p>
<p>Whether you’re willing to admit it or not, EDA is at a crossroad. With where the semiconductor industry is heading, can anyone honestly doubt a conventional wisdom shake up is long overdue? As an industry, we must expand our thinking. I’m talking “the world isn’t flat” kind of thinking. We are at a critical point. It just isn’t a “maybe” or a “someday” debate anymore.</p>
<p>From what customers tell me, it’s a “must” and “how” debate now.  And the “how is called EDA360. <a title="EDA360 Vision" href="http://www.eda360.com" target="_blank">(28 pages worth of  “how” to be exact)</a><span id="more-47"></span></p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-68" href="http://beingjohnb.com/2010/04/28/eda360-this-is-a-big-bleepin-deal/andreask-2/"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-68" title="Andreas Kuehlmann, Head of Cadence Labs" src="http://jbwordpresstest.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/andreask1.jpg?w=270&#038;h=180" alt="" width="270" height="180" /></a>The process we diligently continue to support? Yeah, we need to turn it on its head – literally – and begin solving the tops down equation of application-driven design. And not the “application-driven” design we claim to do today. In the EDA360 future, application -driven design will mean system development in a design environment where the end results are applications that dynamically optimize the configuration of the hardware they’re running on – all based on the specific task requirements the app is performing. This kind of tops-down design is the end game. Definitely awesome, definitely not today.</p>
<p>EDA360 requires the power of an ecosystem – what we can achieve together if we focus on solving the hard problems. No single vendor or vendor category can get there alone. EDA360 will drive a massive set of collective contributions: ideas, technologies, tools, methodologies. Open, integration-centric, not proprietary. All aimed at delivering the end game.</p>
<p>Since I fully expect a broad range of comments – everyone from the project engineer right up to executive teams will likely jump in &#8211; here’s what EDA360 is <strong>NOT</strong>:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Health care reform. Could the topic even be avoided the last month or so? While the whole country seemed obsessed with various aspects of health care reform and deadlocked in bitter debate, my short attention span became bored somewhere around <a title="Man Arrested for Threatening Calls" href="http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/90827-man-arrested-for-death-threat-on-sen-murrsay" target="_blank">angry calls to senators’ message lines </a>and repetitive news highlights covering multi-city tea parties.</p>
<p>Underneath the emotional reaction this debate sparks, no one can deny that no matter which side of the fence you stand on, change is happening. Like it or not, we ARE witnessing a significant transformation in our health care system. To me, regardless of the issues, the compelling angle to health care reform is really…how did it happen, now? Decades have passed and several administrations have tried to tackle this massive problem. Everyone failed. Some even failed miserably. Sure, what finally ended up in the legislation or the politics that led to its passing are very important from a historical sense– but my double take was on the transformational behaviors that emerged to drive this change.<span id="more-34"></span></p>
<p>I am an avid believer that transformational behaviors are the forcing functions to make change happen. <a title="John Bruggeman, CMO, Cadence" href="http://www.cadence.com/cadence/executive_team/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank">As the marketing guy at a technology company</a>, I’m always on the lookout for the signs – the subtle smoke signals that alert me to the fact something big is on the horizon. I’ve seen how impactful these transformations become and how they truly change the world – they enable us, they change our culture and they affect our quality of life.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, I’ve also seen what can happen to <a title="Will Yahoo Blow It Again?" href="http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2010/04/07/will-yahoo-blow-it-again.aspx" target="_self">a company</a> – or even an entire industry &#8211; with executive leadership that misses the signs and fails to harness the power of these behaviors when they start to emerge.</p>
<p>So what are these transformational behaviors and better yet, am I seeing any in the computing industry that mirror those driving health care reform?  In answer to the second question…HELL YEAH! The computing industry is absolutely experiencing the beginning affects of a <a title="Apple iPad" href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/" target="_self">transformational shift</a> and just like this go-around with health care reform, the winners will align around common behaviors: they will recognize the transformation; drive innovation in support of the transformational shift and lead the way toward broad acceptance.<!--more--></p>
<p>Transformation is a fascinating thing: It seems obvious, right?  Well it’s not. The truth is most people don’t even realize it’s happening until they cross paths with those demonstrating transformational behavior. Even then – resistance or denial often become their most comfortable form of conventional wisdom.</p>
<p>The first phase of transformation is of course, recognition: the moment in time when the need for change is identified. The computing transformation got its start when the mobile phone industry showed people that they could have considerable computing power in a compact device that lasted all day on a single battery charge. PC makers finally picked up on the fact that they should build devices that better suited people’s increasingly mobile lifestyles. It was this recognition that drove change.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-35" href="http://beingjohnb.com/2010/04/07/the-real-healthcare-debate-transformational-behaviors-make-change-happen/lenovo-skylight-smartbook_1/"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-35" title="Lenovo Skylight" src="http://jbwordpresstest.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/lenovo-skylight-smartbook_1.jpg?w=300&#038;h=260" alt="" width="300" height="260" /></a>The next phase is the innovation phase. For the semi industry, this phase has been about a commitment to collaboration and building a new path. PC makers like <a title="Lenovo" href="http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/index.html" target="_self">Lenovo</a>, <a title="Dell" href="http://www.dell.com" target="_self">Del</a>l and now <a title="Apple" href="http://www.apple.com" target="_self">Apple</a> went back to their drawing boards, looked at their processor architectures, and came out with some very cool netbook and tablet devices like the <a title="Lenovo Skylight" href="http://shop.lenovo.com/us/landing_pages/info/10/skylight" target="_self">Lenovo Skylight</a>, the <a title="Dell Mini 5" href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/dell-mini-5-we-have-it/" target="_self">Dell Mini 5</a> and the <a title="iPad: Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad" target="_self">Apple iPad</a>.  Semi companies are living in a different world than they were five years ago – new devices and new demands are pushing them beyond what they thought possible – and definitely beyond what they felt ownership for.</p>
<p>Lastly, the third phase of transformation is acceptance: the process of embracing change and ensuring a successful revolution. Semi companies right now are stuck somewhere between phase two and phase three.  Some are just starting to innovate, others are already building out the ecosystems to support and sustain their innovation – to developers, partners and consumers.  If consumers continue to move away from their long-standing commitment to PCs and laptops they will want and need an ecosystem of apps, software, content and connectivity in place to feel comfortable.</p>
<p>Like health care reform, the computing transformation has not been quick or easy. Think dial-up connectivity. Ouch! On second thought, let’s not go there. The point is that big changes happened in health care reform because transformational behaviors emerged and forced the process. Equally as significant, a shift is underway in the computing industry and these same behaviors are forcing change in a similar fashion. The winners will recognize, innovate and drive acceptance for this shift. The losers? Well, they’ll just miss the smoke signals underneath a thick cloud of denial.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I am a software guy. I admit, sometimes it can cloud my judgment but in this case – not an issue.  If you think about it, it’s really obvious. Mark my words … the next significant software evolution will not come from the Apples, Googles or Oracles of the world – Microsoft, in my opinion, already bailed so no big expectations there. The next generation of great software infrastructure will come from those formally known as semiconductor companies – a category description these companies technically will no longer fall into. While this may seem unlikely, it’s actually more realistic than you might think. The day of reckoning is rapidly approaching.</p>
<p>Outrageous prediction? Not really &#8211; the reason is simple: Consumers are driving demand for devices that do more than ever before – more than they can even imagine.  We want handsets with all the cool apps we see on TV; we want gaming consoles that provide such a realistic experience, we feel like we’re living the game; we want TVs so on demand, we can search for content from sources we didn’t even know were available…AND we want it all at a lower price point.</p>
<p>Device companies that used to provide total solutions now need to focus all of their energy and attention on delivering the game-changing applications I described above. They don’t have the time or resources to develop, test and deliver applications infrastructure. Therefore, they are demanding that their semiconductor suppliers provide it.</p>
<p>This semiconductor makeover won’t be easy – and there will likely be new winners and losers. It will require no small feat of overhauling their business models, technology and product offerings, processes and operations – quite frankly, their core DNA.  It will be, without a doubt, the hardest challenge the industry has faced yet. But in order to be deliver, it must be undertaken and mastered.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week, New York Times technology reporter, Steve Lohr, <a title="NYT: Innovation Spending Looks Ressesion Resistant" href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/30/innovation-spending-looks-recession-resistant/">wrote about a Booz&amp;Company annual survey</a> of the 1,000 largest corporate spenders on research and development. In an economic environment laced with cost cutting measures across capital investments, marketing and payroll, the obvious premise for a survey on this topic would be that R&amp;D spending would also take a hit.</p>
<p><a title="Booz&amp;Co: Innovators Ready for Rebound" href="http://www.booz.com/global/home/what_we_think/reports_and_white_papers/article/47086689">Not so, according to the results</a>. Respondents indicated that R&amp;D budgets actually increased 5.7 percent in 2008 and 70% planned to maintain or increase their spend in 2009. Surprising? Not really given the survey also revealed more than 90% of the participating executives said innovation was critical to their companies’ success. More than 90%! With 14 pages of summary, testimonials, pie charts and graphs, this report gives a clear picture of just how integral innovation is to the corporate strategies behind the world’s most important industries.</p>
<p>The report uses an arms-race analogy to describe how the 1,000 largest corporate R&amp;D spenders consider innovation so important, they don’t want to disarm despite the short-term economics. Innovation is the foundation they are betting on to hold their market positions and gain a competitive edge. In their minds, everything can be cut…but not R&amp;D.</p>
<p>For me personally, the release of the Booz&amp;Company results couldn’t have been better timed – today happens to be the fourth annual Innovation Day. But with the added reinforcement of the survey conclusions, a big question came to mind. How does an “arms merchant” like <a title="Cadence, CDNS" href="http://www.cadence.com" target="_self">Cadence</a> take advantage of the innovation arms race? The answer is simple. We INNOVATE!<span id="more-8"></span></p>
<p>The survey reached 1,000 of the largest corporate spenders on R&amp;D. These companies are the leaders in their respective industries – all well-known for innovation. They are also EDA customers. So when I say the answer for Cadence is to innovate…I’m talking about creating technology that is not just tightly aligned with but intrinsic to the innovation our customers bet their companies on.</p>
<p>EDA customers use the innovation we create to change the world – literally, their products change the world for consumers and businesses. If we enable them to bring products to market faster, more cost effectively and with better quality, our innovation becomes invaluable to their success. We become the competitive weapon they won’t go to battle without.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Day 10 in my new CMO gig at Cadence…</p>
<p>After 100s of meetings, I have 1000s of thoughts relating to my new favorite obsession — EDA. Market dynamics, ecosystem, competitive landscape, conventional wisdom, business models, growth segments, product direction, pricing and packaging — the list of challenges goes on and on.</p>
<p>But the one observation &#8211; beyond all the others &#8211; that completely blows my mind is the intense cynicism from friends surrounding my decision to join<a title="Cadence (NASDAQ: CDNS)" href="http://www.cadence.com"> Cadence</a>. On pretty much a daily basis, I‘m asked, “Why <a title="Follow Me On Twitter: @johnbruggeman" href="http://www.twitter.com/johnbruggeman">John</a>, would a marketing guy like you make a move to EDA?” Translation: “What the hell were you thinking?”</p>
<p>I’m just two weeks in and unquestionably confident that my decision was right. How can I be so sure? Well, I can clearly pinpoint the exact thought process behind the decision and it all started when I read one simple article. <span id="more-4"></span></p>
<p>I’ve learned from experience that it’s easy to know when it’s time to leave a job, but it’s really hard to know where to go. Thankfully, my fellow critical thinkers, this industry has many pundits who have outlined “the rules” that are meant to help us find the light as we make our way up the path of advancement. “The rules” give us generally accepted principles or tribal wisdom by which most people should judge a new opportunity.</p>
<p>As luck would have it, I happened across an article published on <a title="Time For A Legendary Job" href="http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/07/17/why-it-is-a-great-time-to-get-a-job-in-tech/" target="_self">Fortune.com</a> that was skillfully written by <a title="Chris Lochhead" href="http://www.lochhead.com" target="_self">a seer of great industry insight</a> and highlighted the 10 things to look for in a “LEGENDARY” job. I recognized them right away – this article covered “the rules” in all of their well-acknowledged, well-heeded glory.</p>
<p>Things to look for in a “legendary” job like…</p>
<p>Number 1: a company in a growing market with a strong brand and leading position.</p>
<p>And number 2: a company with products that customers view as aspirin (read: essential), not vitamins (a supplement). In bad economies no one takes their vitamins.</p>
<p>And number 3: a strong balance sheet with lots of cash.</p>
<p>And number 4: a legendary executive team.</p>
<p>And numbers 5, 6, 7, 8-10. All more of the same!</p>
<p>Ten things no one would argue with, right? <a title="Apple" href="http://www.apple.com" target="_self">Pretty obvious stuff for a successful enterprise</a>. I read each recommendation closely and then to be sure, I read them again. Only I came to a different conclusion. Companies that already have these ten things going for them don’t need much marketing help.</p>
<p>I mean, who needs great marketing if the company already is the market leader, in a growing market, with the leading brand and the leading market position, with products that are absolutely essential, all supported with an awesome balance sheet?</p>
<p>Maybe I look at the world a bit differently than most people, but I aspire to be a great marketer and to meet a great challenge. To actually accomplish something extraordinary, I knew I was going to have to break “the rules”.</p>
<p>So why EDA? Here it is – short answer. EDA is an industry that needs to reacquaint itself with “legendary” marketing.</p>
<p>Let me tell you why I think so. EDA is a critically important industry. It matters, but somewhere along the way it has forgotten that it matters. The super complex, increasingly powerful, application-rich chips that are required in every device that is produced today CANNOT be developed without EDA tools.</p>
<p>However, this industry is in desperate need of leadership and vision. There’s a transformational business and technology shift changing the way that companies develop silicon. We’re at one of those inflexion points that comes once a generation. I strongly believe the company that enables and accelerates this transition will become the undisputed leader on all fronts: innovation, technology, thought and market.</p>
<p>EDA used to be exclusively about design. I’ll even pay homage to <a title="Our Rock Stars Aren't Like Your Rock Stars" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqLPHrCQr2I" target="_self">Intel’s symbolic team of engineering rock stars</a> portrayed in its recent ad campaign.  In the past, Intel-esque rock stars designed the chips we know and love. It was their goal to constantly make chips smaller, faster, with higher quality and reliability. Basically, these rock stars have continuously innovated all of the IP on a chip – every last piece of it. It isn’t like a friendly game of <a title="Guitar Hero" href="http://www.guitarhero.com" target="_self">Guitar Hero</a> either. The rock stars in this game have to spend a massive amount of time acquiring the resources and skills necessary to even start thinking about playing. You can’t fake it – there’s no air guitar.</p>
<p>Nowadays, it’s a fact — every industry is up against ever-increasing time, cost, quality and global competition constraints. I see some forces aggressively beating our industry’s “rock star model” into submission: the physics challenging the continuation of Moore’s law, the increasing importance of software that is embedded and the applications that run on chips. It takes too long, costs too much and worse, the quality is never where it needs to be. There is a tremendous amount of risk involved. It is impossible for one company to afford to keep all of the rock stars under one roof.</p>
<p>These forces have led the chip design process to a point of discontinuity. Integration is becoming just as important as design — integration of analog and digital IP, tighter and earlier integration of every stage of the design process, integration of heterogeneous, multiple cores on a single chip, integration of hardware and software. These and other integration challenges will forever change the semiconductor companies and their value chains.</p>
<p>EDA must rise to meet its customers’ changing requirements. Our customers need help in the transition to a business model that can meet the cost structure, meet the time constraints, and deliver quality in a more complex world. The rock star model must evolve. Rock stars will still create amazing IP, but “system integrators” will be equally important in the value creation equation.</p>
<p>These system integrators will work with internal and external IP rock stars, and even their end systems customers, using distributed systems. Hardware and software teams will be managed using executable specifications and metrics that bring more predictability to schedules, just as the complex system integrators do in the embedded software world that I come from.</p>
<p>That’s right, I spent the last five years in embedded software going through a very similar industry transformation. I know from experience what a shift to an integration model looks like. Similar to embedded software, a community of experts in the EDA industry is forming and actively gaining momentum. They can’t be stopped and they won’t be ignored. They’re driven by fundamental economic forces. This EDA community is quickly developing a system integration model that can be broadly used and reused by the entire industry. But what comes next?</p>
<p>The way I see it, no one has answered the call of the community. No one has stepped up, raised their hand and focused on making sure our customers have the tools and techniques they need to face the coming challenges of the industry.</p>
<p>Well look closely, because my hand is up!</p>
<p>A great company is going to seize this opportunity. At the end of the day, this company will have achieved legendary results and be able to boast all of “the ten things to look for” mentioned in the Fortune article. This company will be THE “legendary” EDA company. This vision is why I joined Cadence.</p>
